Abstract

In this study; the characterization of the wastes produced in two large campuses (Farabi and Ibn-i Sina) of Zonguldak Bulent Ecevit University has been determined. The study was carried out with samples taken from different garbage containers on campuses, representing the spring semester between first week of February and June 2019, when the education continues. In these studies, solid waste characterization was determined by the ASTM-American Society for Testing Materials, D5231. In the characterizations, 36.3% (-/+ 14.94 SD) of waste from Farabi campus is paper-cardboard, 17.4% (-/+ 6.94 SD) plastics, 32.9% (-/+ 21, 5 SD) glass, 1.69% (-/+ 1 SD) metals, 6.7% (-/+ 9.5 SD) organic waste, 4.5% (-/+ 3.3 SD) personal use and % 0.3 (+/- 0.5 SD) textile wastes. In the Ibn Sina campus, 15.1% (-/+ 3.7 Std.) of waste is paper-cardboard, 26.6% (-/+ 8 SD) plastics, 13% (-/+ 15.3 SD) glass, 1.92% (-/+ 1.9 SD) metals, 12.5% (-/+ 5.7 SD) organic wastes, 22.4% (-/+ 6 SD) Personal use and 8.3% (-/+ 2.8 SD) textile wastes. No hazardous wastes (batteries, lamps, markers etc.) were encountered in both campus waste characterizations.
