Abstract

The Second World War began on September 1, 1939. After the start of the war, the Iranian government declared its neutrality. However, the Persian Gulf was important for the allies both for the delivery of aid to Soviet Russia and because it was located on the route to India. For this reason, Iranian territory was occupied by Soviet Russia and Britain after a while. The invasion of Iran became one of the most important issues discussed in Turkish public opinion, since Iran was both on the Turkish border and a country with a dense Turkish population. There were also concerns that the invasion of Iran could lead to the invasion of Turkey. After the invasion of Iran, some border incidents occurred on the Turkish-Iranian border. These border incidents started to occur between Soviet Russia, which occupied the northern regions of Iran, and Turkey. Although long negotiations were held between the two states for the solution of the border incidents, no result was reached. In 1943 and 1944, when the commissions established could not solve the border incidents, the situation was referred to higher authorities. The aim of this study is to examine the Turkish public opinion's view of the invasion of Iran during the Second World War and some border incidents that took place on the Turkish-Iranian border.
