Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the need for psychological counseling and guidance as a determinant of health empowerment among community-dwelling older adults. A cross-sectional design was employed, and the sample comprised 600 older adults who visited five family health centers. The mean scores for the Older People's Guidance and Psychological Counseling Needs Scale (OGPCNS) and the Elders Health Empowerment Scale (EHES) were 49.74 +/- 7.87 and 27.16 +/- 6.03, respectively. Furthermore, being single, widowed, or divorced; having a primary school education or less; having an income equal to or lower than expenses; regular medication use; poor or very poor perceived health; and higher needs for guidance and psychological counseling were found to be associated with lower levels of health empowerment among older adults. These findings underscore the importance of designing interventions to enhance health empowerment that consider both the sociodemographic characteristics and psychological counseling and guidance needs of community-dwelling older adults.
