Abstract

Businesses convey the messages that they want to give to their consumers through different means. Promotional posters are also one of these means. Promotional posters play a key role in terms of reflecting the cultural and social structures of countries. By reinforcing this role, it is possible to clarify through semiotic analysis what the written and visual elements are used for, what messages they include and what meaning is attributed to them. In this context, the aim of the research is to analyze the messages desired to be given by studying the elements in the promotional posters. It is aimed to explain how the meaning is constructed as well as the semantic differences by passing beyond the primarily perceived elements. Within the scope of this study, the promotion posters of Turkey, which are on the main page of Tourism Promotion General Directorate, have been examined with semiotics. The total number of the posters, which could be reached, is 75. Complete count sampling was done within the scope of the study. In semiotic analysis, Peirce, Barthes and Greimas models were utilized. In addition, the content analysis was also used in the general evaluation of the posters. The studies dealing with the semiotic analysis of the promotional posters in our country are very limited due to the fact that this area is new. The study has originality and importance since it has not yet been evaluated in national and international literature with the aspect that it was dealt with. It is aimed to fill this void in the literature. It is thought that the study will contribute to the theory and practice in this direction. When the research results are generally evaluated, it is seen that besides sea tourism alternative types of tourism such as cultural tourism, religious tourism, winter tourism, golf tourism, balloon tourism and nature tourism have been reflected in the posters. In addition, food and beverages, crafts, traditions and customs related to Turkish culture are also included. When the results of the semiotic analyzes are evaluated, it is seen that hospitality, tolerance, modernism, traditionality, eastern and western relations display unity.
