Abstract

The introduction of trauma systems, triage protocols, standardized resuscitation and damage control surgery has dramatically improved outcomes and survival following major trauma. Temporary closure of the abdominal wall and the survival of patients with formerly lethal abdominal trauma result in a variety of problems for surgeons. These include the open abdomen where inadequate tissue or excessive tension prohibits primary closure.
